Dr. Christopher Lam

Refusing healthcare to refugees is a danger to public health.

Lam, a Family Physician, says “Tuberculosis is a good example. Someone could have this but not quite sick enough or is sick enough but will not access the health care system because of lack of coverage. That person can actually then cough and spread the TB germ all over…Without the knowledge that person is spreading it to others, which is a public health issue, you have denied that person care and endangered the public health as well.”

And he criticizes the policy on humanitarian grounds: “As a Canadian Physician I think it’s shameful, in one word. Why? Because in order to deter ‘opportunists’, ‘bogus refugees’…we have to become less kind, less passionate, less inclusive. Is that what we want? As a society we’ll be judged by how we treat the most vulnerable.”
